Parametric design is the first step towards conscious design, where impression and empiricism is replaced by precise calculation and concrete data.
Its roots can be traced back to the development of calculus by Leibniz, but its main contemporary promoter is Patrik Schumacher (Zaha Hadid Architects). The explosion of this principle is not only due to developments in HW and SW capability and the general availability of computers, the main cause is the development of design philosophy and expertise. Postmodern intuition and symbolism is being replaced by engineering precision design with mathematical elegance and efficiency. If we look closely at Zaha Hadid's buildings we do not see emotionally flowing and inefficient geometries. We witness a mathematically precise conceptual thinking, harking back to the progressive architecture of the early twentieth century avant-garde.
Simply put, parametric design uses a system of data to influence the desired outcome. Mathematical models, or equation optimization algorithms, give architects a catalog of solutions from which a preferred option can then be selected. It can be said that for parametric design, it is not a problem to create thousands of variations on a given theme - what would be unthinkably laborious for a human is easy for a computer.
Thanks to parametric design, the design can be optimized and lead to an efficient solution where multiple variables can be controlled.
Thus, we can have a building volume that has the most efficient distribution of facades to the sun and shading, has efficiently spaced structures, and is mathematically elegant. When used in 3DCP, it is a necessity without which it will be impossible to push the boundaries of architecture and to master the principles and concept of reality. The next step from parametric design is the direct use of AI in the sense of GAN, NN, Stable Diffusion and other neural networks which are more efficient and faster for some predictions.
It is the right answer that AI and parametric design will go hand in hand because together they become a powerful system.
