This time we are addressing the ICE #WeAreICE questionnaire to software developer Robin Weers, who has been working with us since January 2020. He is originally from Germany and has been living in the Czech Republic for three years. As a company open to all nationalities we wanted to know what it is like to be a foreigner in a Czech company.
➡️ Is the Czech language a challenge for you? Do you have any funny stories about the Czech language so far?
The Czech language is a big challenge for me. The pronunciation as well as the rules of the 7 cases are very difficult. In Prague there is a Subway Station called Strizkov. I'm unable to pronounce it at all. But when I put my hands on my cheeks and press my mouth together, I’m able to pronounce it perfectly and it also helps with other Czech words. Looks stupid but people will understand what I’m trying to say.
➡️What other difficulties you can mention that are related to work in a Czech company?
The Czech mentality is not that different from Germans, so my only issue is the language. I need to be very proactive to understand information that is easy to understand for others as it's in Czech language.
➡️Is it anything about Czech nationality that doesn't give you sense?
The only thing would be, why is it so hard for Czech drivers to stop at a pedestrian crossing?
➡️Do you remember when you heard about ICE for the first time?
This is a boring story. I just opened Jobs.cz and saw a job offer from ICE.
What he means is that finding ICE is very, very easy 😉
➡️ How is your career path in ICE?
I would say it’s going well. In the 3 years I worked in ICE I developed from a Junior programmer to a Product Owner. ICE gives you a lot of chances to develop your skills and grow which is not very typical in German companies.
➡️Do you reveal what was your biggest “fuck-up”/failure at work so far?
I messed up a Software backup so I needed to redo the work of a full day.
➡️What is the most valuable thing about work in ICE?
The People. Everybody is trying to help each other.
➡️Describe ICE culture in 3 words.
We are ICE.
➡️What will you recommend to the next foreign candidate that enters ICE?
Be careful who you drink with at company events if you can’t hold your liquor.
And what does the leader Zsolt Orosz say about Robin? "Robin is a native German and it's always funny to say that he knows German quite well. Thanks to Robin, the whole SW team is moving forward with the fact that we use a foreign language for internal communication on a daily basis, both English and German."
We wish Martin a good life in the Czech Republic and that he still enjoys his time in ICE.🌞
